Capra's Son Contributes to Gift Set

14 Oct, 2006 By: Jessica Wolf

Frank Capra Jr. grew up in the world of his father's filmmaking.

He was a key contributor to the boxed set Sony Pictures Home Entertainment put together as a tribute to his legendary director father, Frank Capra.

For each film in the boxed set he recorded a “Frank Capra Jr. Remembers” featurette, and he participates in audio commentary on the set.

He also produced the included documentary Frank Capra's American Dream, which is hosted by director Ron Howard. Capra Jr. followed in his father's illustrious filmmaking footsteps and became a producer. He's president of independent film studio Screen Gems.

Capra said it was nostalgic and inspiring to work on a collection of his dad's beloved films.

“This is the first time that a really nice package of my father's films has been put together like this,” he said.

“We felt like anything we could do to support it we were happy to do.”

There was plenty of material to choose from for the set's included collectible book, he said.

“We used a lot of photographs that my mother had,” Capra said. “My mother was especially good at keeping scrapbooks, pictures, newspaper articles and all that.”

Capra Jr. said he has found that people still respond strongly to his father's films, even though they are 40 or 50 years old. He hopes the DVD set is one way to open up a new generation to his work.

“I think there will be a lot of younger people who have never seen these films but who will find in them a timelessness,” he said.

“They speak to themes that are just as important today as they were when they were made.”
