Cable Modem Sales on the Rise

6 Dec, 2002 By: Hive News

It's another mark in IP video-on-demand suppliers' favor.

More than 3 million cable modems were shipped to the worldwide market in the third quarter of 2002, a 19.4 percent increase from the same period last year, according to Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Inc. Worldwide cable modem shipments totaled 2.5 million units in the third quarter of 2001.

"North America continues to see strong demand for cable broadband access services in the third quarter of 2002, and shipments of cable modems reflect this trend," said Patti Reali, principal analyst for Dataquest's worldwide telecommunications group.

"Continued introduction of new broadband cable markets and the migration of dial-up users to these access modalities will continue to drive demand for cable modems," Reali added. "However, price will become an issue as the market moves into the 'early majority' phase of adoption."
