Cable Guy's Mater May Star In Short on 'Cars' DVD9 Jun, 2006 By: Fred Topel
Pixar usually keeps its DVD plans secret, but extras for Cars already are racing through filmmakers' minds.
The makers of this summer's Cars, which hit theaters last week, revealed they're working on an animated short featuring some of the film's characters. The five-minute “Ghost Light” stars Larry the Cable Guy reprising his role as Mater the tow truck and is intended as a bonus for the eventual DVD release of Cars.
“It's much like the movie,” Larry said. “They wanted to show Mater's heart and how he was toward other people. So it's kind of like the same kind of thing, but it's a whole other story.”
“Ghost Light” is based on the phenomenon of the legendary Route 66. Route 66 biographer Michael Wallis, who consulted on Cars and provides the voice of the automobile sheriff, explained how the legend inspired the new short film.
“It's the head of a decapitated Indian floating around,” Wallis said. “That's the story, but it's a big gaseous ball that floats around, and you can see it. It hovers around Route 66 where Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma gently collide through Route 66 states. So in the short, the sheriff and some other people scare the bejeezus out of Mater.”
Cars producer Darla Anderson added that other extras might include home movies of the filmmakers' tour of Route 66, as well as technical animation bloopers.
