BVHE Announces Disney Titles for Sony's PSP

Buena Vista Home Entertainment is the third studio to officially line up video product for Sony's upcoming handheld entertainment device, the PlayStation Portable (PSP).

The studio announced today it will release four Disney titles to the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format: National Treasure, (which streets May 3), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Reign of Fire, Hero and Kill Bill Vol. 1.

More titles will be announced throughout the year, according to the supplier.

Specific release dates and pricing information for BVHE's UMD titles are yet to be announced. UMD offers 1.8 GB of storage space on the 60mm disc, which allows for DVD-standard picture quality in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.

BVHE joins Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Lions Gate Entertainment as UMD suppliers.

Sony has set XXX, Hellboy, Resident Evil 2 and Once Upon a Time in Mexico to street on UMD April 19, at $19.95. Sony also plans to release event movies, blockbuster theatrical hits, family titles and any films with strong appeal in the PSP's 18- to 24-year-old market simultaneously on DVD and UMD, starting with House of Flying Daggers on April 19, priced at $28.95 for the mini disc.

Lions Gate announced it will release Saw, Punisher, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Open Water, House of the Dead, Rambo: First Blood, Total Recall, Young Guns, Step Into Liquid, Universal Soldier, Stargate and National Lampoon's Van Wilder to UMD at prices comparable to regular DVD. Street dates have not yet been announced.

Lions Gate is the only supplier thus far to announce it would also add extra content to the discs when possible.
