Buena Vista Readies Second Wave of EZ-D Titles3 Oct, 2003 By: Holly J. Wagner
Buena Vista Home Entertainment is preparing to roll out the second wave of titles offered on EZ-D disposable DVDs, although the test format seems to be getting little attention from consumers so far.
New titles due Oct. 7 are Wes Craven Presents Dracula II: Ascension, Paid in Full, The Quiet American, Shanghai Knights, Sweet Home Alabama and Wes Craven Presents They.
A third wave scheduled for Nov. 6 will include Bringing Down the House, Chicago, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, The Count of Monte Cristo, View From the Top, Coyote Ugly and O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The discs, which become unplayable about 48 hours after the consumer opens their vacuum-sealed packages, first arrived Sept. 9 in stores in Austin, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; Charleston, S.C.; and Peoria/Bloomington, Ill. Buena Vista and Flexplay are testing the discs primarily at grocery, drug and convenience stores but also at mass merchants like Pamida/ShopKo and at Movie Gallery, Hastings Entertainment and FYE stores in some markets.
Buena Vista has also offered some of the titles simultaneously on other new delivery formats. For example, Shanghai Knights and Bringing Down the House are available on the Movielink.com and CinemaNow.com download services on which Buena Vista began offering films at about the same time the EZ-D rollout started.
