Buena Vista Debuts DVD Navigation Features

Drop that remote!

Buena Vista Home Entertainment (BVHE) is launching two new features on future Disney DVDs.

The supplier's new Fastplay technology lets viewers start watching as soon as they put the disc into the player and will be included on select DVDs going forward.

Fastplay will automatically play back previews, the feature presentation and select bonus materials. Viewers who aren't remote-shy can skip the trailers.

Many other studios offer some kind of direct-to-the-feature play system on kidvid titles, but BVHE plans to offer the system on some titles rated for older viewers as well.

For viewers who prefer to navigate, new EasyFind menus use standardized icons to help viewers find their favorite setup options and bonus features. The menus are planned for all Disney DVDs going forward. The initial menu screen for each title will be unique, but navigation after the first click on discs with EasyFind will include the same types of features under a set of broad headings from one disc to another. Two-disc sets will feature an index page identifying all of the bonus features available on both discs.

The new technologies will debut on The Three Musketeers, starring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy, streeting Aug. 17.

“With our Fastplay technology, consumers, especially those with kids, will love this easier way to enjoy their DVD,” said BVHE president Bob Chapek, who called it “hassle-free DVD viewing.”
