Broadway Darling The Producers Destined for DVD14 Sep, 2002 By: Jessica Wolf
Video viewers will get to witness the birth of Broadway's current favorite baby “The Producers” with MGM Home Entertainment's The Producers special edition DVD arriving Dec. 3 (prebook Nov. 5)
The stage show starring Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane last year garnered the most Tony awards ever (12) for a single play and has drawn record-setting crowds in New York. Now MGM debuts the DVD of the film that started it all, the screwball musical comedy written and directed by Mel Brooks — his directorial debut — which earned Academy Award nominations for best story and best screenplay in 1968.
The DVD boasts a new 16x9 transfer, digitally enhanced 5.1 surround sound and extras like the hour-long documentary “The Making Of The Producers,” a deleted scene, a sketch gallery of original set designs, a “Wild Lines” audio feature, a photo gallery, Easter eggs and more. The DVD is priced at $24.98
MGM also will offer a $2 in-pack rebate coupon inside another Brooks comedy DVD, Spaceballs, redeemable for six months beginning on The Producers' street date.
