Brits Will Get the First Look at Harry Potter Video

15 Feb, 2002 By: Jessica Wolf

Harry Potter fans in the United Kingdom get a first look at the video release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (known there as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone). Warner Home Video's special edition DVD and VHS streets May 11 in the U.K., more than two weeks before the U.S. street date of May 28.

The studio is boosting the release with a £3 million (about $4.5 million) U.K. ad campaign.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has earned the equivalent of nearly $90 million in theaters in the United Kingdom so far.

The movie was released worldwide theatrically in November and earned $314 million in U.S. theaters alone, but its roots are decidedly and firmly planted in the U.K. All Harry's adventures take place in northern England; the movie was filmed in that country; author J.K. Rowling lives in Scotland and got her start writing through a grant from Scotland's Council on the Arts; and the film's cast consists entirely of U.K. actors and actresses.
