Blockbuster Upping Gamestation Stores in U.K.25 Sep, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Responding to local trade media in the United Kingdom, Blockbuster Inc. confirmed it would expand, by an undisclosed number, its base of subsidiary Gamestation video game retail locations in 2007.
London-based Gamestation currently has more than 200 stores in the U.K.
Dallas-based Big Blue has repeatedly announced it would actively seek to divest itself of “non-core assets,” including primarily international operations.
In July, Blockbuster announced it had fired longtime London-based executive Christopher Wyatt, EVP of international operations.
In March, Big Blue announced it was ceasing operations at 86 locations in Spain due to piracy and increased consumer use of digital television, including on-demand programming.
In a statement, Blockbuster said it expects its international operations will continue according to their business plans, which in the case of Gamestation calls for the “investment in a significant number of new … stores.”
