Blockbuster Pushes PS2

29 Nov, 2001 By: John Gaudiosi

In addition to providing a full lineup of GameCube and Xbox software and hardware for rental, Blockbuster Video is bolstering its stock of PlayStation 2 games and introducing rental guarantees with some of the hottest PS2 games, according to company executives.

In addition to guaranteeing the title will be in stock for rental, Blockbuster is selling Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for PS2 at select locations. All stores are selling $5 collectible Blockbuster Gift Cards featuring Metal Gear Solid 2 artwork.

“This title takes an old favorite and supercharges it to take gaming to the next level,” says Brian Woodrick, director of interactive merchandising at Blockbuster. “It has graphics, speed, everything a gamer wants. We think it’s going to fly off the shelves, so we’ve stocked up and included it as a guaranteed title.”

Other guaranteed PS2 titles include THQ’s WWF Smackdown: Just Bring It!, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto III and Activision’s Tony Hawks’ Pro Skater 3.

“As the weather cools and the holidays approach, people start spending more and more time playing the latest and greatest games,” Woodrick says. “The last three months of the year are always overflowing with hundreds of new game titles, which is why we overstock the shelves with as many of these hit titles as possible, offering a wide selection for all the platforms.”

From Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, participating Blockbuster stores will provide one free five-day game rental to customers who bring in a receipt from any retailer of any new game console purchased during this promotional period. The free game rental must be in the format of the new game system on the receipt.

“A new system is only as fun as the games that go with it, so Blockbuster is offering a free game rental to everyone who buys a new system this holiday season,” says Woodrick.

The company continues to work deals with publishers for exclusive content on old gaming systems. While there are no new games heading to retail for Nintendo 64, Midway will release NFL Blitz: Special Edition and Crave will release Razor Freestyle Scooter for N64 exclusively for rental through Blockbuster, beginning Nov. 30.
