Blockbuster Israel Priming Web TV Delivery by 2008

4 Sep, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Blockbuster Inc.'s recent acquisition of Movielink signaled a desire by the No. 1 DVD rental company to deliver movies electronically over the Internet.

Now, Blockbuster Israel (www.bbm.co.il), a 30-store franchise also operating 250 rental kiosks in the region, has partnered with an Israeli Web-based TV provider to begin offering set-top box devices with video-on-demand (VOD) and digital high-def TV programming in 2008.

Similar to Netflix Inc.'s Instant Watch streaming service, Blockbuster Israel also plans to offer movie downloads to PCs later this year.

Partnering with Orca Interactive Ltd., a manufacturer and distributor of IPTV middleware and applications, the Blockbuster franchise seeks to offer its customers a triple-play option that includes in-store, online and electronic sellthrough.

“This announcement marks a new era for Blockbuster Israel, driving us to the forefront of next-generation video services,” said Ofer Lowry, chairman of Blockbuster Israel. “… We can now deliver the latest movies and television series directly to subscribers' homes through an advanced digital platform.”
