Blockbuster Hires Marketing Chief9 Jul, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Blockbuster Inc.'s transformation from pure DVD rental play to consummate entertainment retailer took another step when veteran restaurant executive Rebecca “Becky” Johnson was named chief marketing officer.
Johnson has more than 25 years in retailing and consumer packaged goods, most recently as chief marketing and global brand officer with Brinker International, the Dallas-based corporate parent of Chili's Grill & Bar, Romano's Macaroni Grill and On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, among others.
Dallas-based Blockbuster is aggressively expanding beyond traditional DVD rental with the sales of DVD movies, video games, digital downloads, food, coffee and entertainment hardware, including Blu-ray players.
“[Johnson's] expertise in consumer insights, history of successful marketing/brand development and proven ability to redefine the customer experience will be a tremendous asset as we continue to transform Blockbuster to offer consumers convenient access to media entertainment,” CEO Jim Keyes said in a statement.
Brinker posted a consolidated net loss of $38.8 million on revenue of more than $900 million in its recent quarter ended March 26.
