Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes Aug. 13 hailed the decisions by Warner Home Video and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to delay new release DVDs 28 days and 30 days, respectively, to $1 dollar-per-day rental kiosks, spearheaded by Redbox.
Warner Home Video Aug. 13 said beginning in October it will offer rental kiosks new release titles 28 days after street date. New terms will affect those who still go through wholesalers and may also affect the studio's relationship with Netflix.
No bells will go off and no prizes will be awarded, but some consumer renting a DVD from a Redbox machine over the weekend will have in their hand the half-billionth rental to come from the machines, the company said Aug. 13.
Video game sales fell 29% in July compared to the same month last year, from $1.19 billion in July 2008 to $848.9 million last month, according to The NPD Group.
Citing a weaker release slate, Image Entertainment Aug. 13 reported a loss of $3.03 million for the quarter ended June 30, compared to earnings of $1.69 million in the same quarter last year.
