BestBuy.com Enters Free Shipping Fray2 Jul, 2002 By: Holly J. Wagner
Best Buy Co., Inc. is jumping into the latest e-tail battle with free shipping on all BestBuy.com purchases, although a spokeswoman said the open-ended offer is independent of the other e-tailers' actions.
"BestBuy.com has offered free shipping on various product categories in the past which was popular with our customers," said BestBuy.com SVP John Thompson. "Expanding free shipping to all products is part of Best Buy's continuing commitment to offer value to our customers. By offering it, we are eliminating a barrier to using the online channel, giving the customer the freedom to choose how to shop."
The chain is also matching recent moves at Amazon.com, which two weeks ago began offering free shipping on all orders over $49, and Buy,com, which returned fire by offering free shipping on all purchases and undercutting Amazon.com's book prices by 10 percent. Especially telling is BestBuy,com's decision not to state the duration of the offer.
BestBuy.com's free shipping offer applies to all products including CDs and DVDs.
Online purchases made during the limited time offer will have standard shipping charges automatically deducted during the check-out process, with products delivered by standard ground shipping. Customers may also choose to upgrade to an enhanced shipping option at a reduced cost. If a return or exchange is needed, customers have the choice of returning to a local Best Buy store. BestBuy.com customers already have the option of picking up online purchases in the stores to save delivery fees.
