9 Oct, 2001 By: Hive News

Eden Prairie, Minn.-based electronics retailer Best Buy Co. has launched a service that makes downloadable music from EMI, AOL Time Warner and BMG available for purchase.

Best Buy hopes to add the other major labels to its lineup sometime in the near future.

“Our new digital download site will provide music customers compelling digital media offers from a broad group of label sources, and provide us with another tool to drive the market for new digital services as they develop,” says Scott Young, v.p. and g.m. of entertainment for Best Buy.

The digital download sites are accessible from www.bestbuy.com and www.rioport.com/bestbuy.

According to Bloomberg News, single song downloads will cost from about 99 cents to $1.99 and full-length CDs from $9.99 to $15.99. Best Buy says pricing is still being tested.
