Best Buy to Boost DVD, Games

Best Buy plans to increase the amount of floorspace devoted to DVD and video games as part of its effort to distinguish itself with consumers and gain market share in entertainment software.

“During fiscal 2006, we expect to grow our market share in entertainment software by devoting more selling space in our stores to DVDs and video games, and capitalizing on the introduction of new video game hardware,” according to Best Buy's annual report for the 2005 fiscal year. “We also anticipate continuing to enhance our entertainment offerings, including the introduction of tailored market assortments, and to pursue exclusive arrangements.”

Other retailers have not always been pleased with Best Buy's exclusives, which recently have included exclusive windows on DVD sets from The Rolling Stones and Elton John.

The company's “Win in Entertainment” initiative includes “supporting the development and delivery of new entertainment-related products through multiple distribution channels to increase our market share,” but a Best Buy executive was not immediately available to discuss the specifics.
