Barnes & Noble Inc., the nation's largest bookseller, on Thursday reported total bookstore sales of $253 million for the month of August. Comparable sales for the company's "super" stores, which constitute 92% of all bookstore sales, increased 2.8% for the month, in line with previous guidance.
Comparable sales for B. Dalton, the company's mall store division, which accounts for the balance of bookstore sales, decreased 3.1% in August.
GameStop, the nation's largest specialty retailer of video games, reported August sales of $66.2 million, a 34.7% increase over last year. Comparable store sales increased 28.2% for the month.
Barnes & Noble Inc. operates 569 Barnes & Noble and 331 B. Dalton bookstores, and GameStop (formerly Babbage's), the nation's largest operator of video game and entertainment software stores, has 990 stores.
