England's top Pilates teacher is reaching across the pond to launch her line of workout programming via new fitness player Well Go USA Inc.
Lynne Robinson is the face of Pilates in England. She's trained Duchess Sarah Ferguson, actress Elizabeth Hurley, actor Hugh Grant and British tennis superstar Pat Cash. Now, she teaches Pilates to the country's cricket team.
Athletes increasingly are using Pilates to maintain conditioning, prevent injury and increase flexibility, Robinson said.
Robinson came to Pilates because of persistent back pain. The mother of two grown daughters discovered the discipline 12 years ago while she and her family were living in Australia.
Since then, she helped launch, and serves as director of, the Body Control Pilates Academy and Europe's largest Pilates school, the Body Control Association.
Robinson said if she can do Pilates, anyone can.
“I was one of those kids who would get their mum to write a note and skive off gym class,” she joked.
Her comfortable Cockney personality comes across in her videos. But just because Robinson is easygoing doesn't mean her workouts are.
Each video includes a “back to basics” section in which Robinson talks about her approach, proper breathing and the core muscles used to begin each controlled exercise in her workouts.
Robinson has eight DVD titles ($14.95 each) available in the U.S. market from Well Go USA: The Perfect Body, Pilates for Beginners, Pilates Express, Pilates Powerhouse, Shape Up, Pilates for Pregnancy, The Pilates Body and Everyday Pilates With Fern Brittan (featuring England's top morning-show host).
Robinson said she believes mat workouts like the ones found on her home video workouts are just as effective as the in-studio Pilates machines.
“The machines were really designed to help you understand the mat movements better,” Robinson said.
