August Sunsplash in a Squeeze Between Two Video Shows25 Jul, 2003 By: Thomas K. Arnold
The squeeze is on for organizers of Sunsplash, the annual video retailer retreat that takes place each August in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Video Software Dealers Association convention this year has been pushed back two weeks, ending just eight days before the 15th annual Sunsplash kicks off Aug. 8.
The East Coast Video Show starts a week early, the last week in September rather than the first week in October.
And yet leaders of the Carolinas Chapter of the VSDA, which has produced the annual event since 1989, are optimistic that they'll have a successful event.
“That's always a concern, but to what degree is open to debate,” said Harold Chamberlain, board member and past president of the Carolinas Chapter.
Keying in on the VSDA convention, he said, “You've got people who are going to both shows, no matter what, and then you've got people who are going to one show or the other, no matter what. The closeness of the two shows probably affects our studio people and vendors much more than it affects the retailers.”
As always, Sunsplash will offer retailers a mixture of fun and education. Popular events again on the schedule include the 11th Annual Myrtle Beach Open golf tournament, a deep-sea fishing cruise, a “Southern Pig Pickin’ dinner, a trip to the Myrtle Waves Water Park and a night at the House of Blues. On the education side, a series of seminars and workshops will explore such topics as managing the transition from VHS to DVD, finding and keeping the best employees and how to generate additional income through eBay, an increasingly popular avenue among independents for disposing of previously viewed product. There also will be an exhibit floor with booths from most of the studios, independent suppliers, and providers of ancillary products and services.
The show runs Aug. 8 - 10 at the Kingston Plantation, north of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Registration is $60 for VSDA members, $85 for nonmembers; the golf tournament and fishing trip are extra.
