Armed with twice the networking speed, built in GPS and 2.0 software that caters to 500 (including 125 free) proprietary and third-party applications, Apple Inc. said it sold 1 million iPhone 3G units ($199 each) in the first three days following its July 11 launch.

Apple, which acknowledged shortages of the new iPhone available in 21 countries, said it took 74 days for the original iPhone to reach 1 million units sold, according to CEO Steve Jobs.

“IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” Jobs said.
