Anchor Bay Kidvids Go 'Boo!'

Buoyed by the success of the “Halloween” and “Evil Dead” franchises and the new “Masters of Horror” film anthology, Anchor Bay Entertainment is maintaining its fright fan base with kids, too.

Anchor Bay, a unit of IDT Entertainment, Aug. 29 will release Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy (DVD $14.98). This title is a sequel to Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktakular, which charted No. 8 among best-selling kids' Halloween DVDs in 2004, according to Nielsen VideoScan.

Both “Scary Godmother” titles aired on Cartoon Network in 2005 and are slated to return to the cable channel this fall.

Also streeting from Anchor Bay Aug. 29 is HIT Entertainment's Thomas & Friends: Thomas' Halloween Adventures (DVD $14.98; $19.98 with an on-pack Halloween caboose toy), the first-ever fright-themed “Thomas” title.

Those two releases are joined by Mad Monster Party (DVD $14.98), from the creators of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.

“Anchor Bay always has been associated with Halloween in the horror space,” said Tim Fournier, VP of marketing. “We have some strong children's properties that have performed well enough for us historically.”

Fournier said the company is careful when marketing horror to children and chose the Halloween theme because it has become such a catalyst for parties at home versus going trick-or-treating.

“These are great titles that could be part of any kid's Halloween party,” Fournier said. “With a new ‘Scary Godmother' and bringing ‘Thomas & Friends' to Halloween for the first time, we thought it was a great opportunity at retail.”
