Amazon Profit, Media Sales Up

Citing across the board gains, including net sales and operating income, online retailer Amazon.com posted first-quarter (ended March 31) profit of $143 million, compared to profit of $111 million during the same period the previous year.

Media revenue in the United States, which includes DVD and digital downloads, increased 22% to $1.2 billion, compared to $990 million the year prior. Internationally, media revenue increased 34% (22% when adjusted for inflation) to more than $1.3 billion, compared to $1 billion the previous year.

The Seattle-based company does not break out individual segment results, including the Amazon Unbox digital service.

CEO Jeff Bezos did say he was happy with the digital initiatives Amazon is able to offer customers.

“It is very early … the revenue is there,” Bezos said in a call with investors. “We are very pleased with the traction with each of the initiatives we have out there.”

Total revenue increased 44% to $4.13 billion, compared to $3 billion the year prior.
