Akimbo Brings PC Video to TV16 Feb, 2004 By: Stephanie Prange
The new company Akimbo, founded by former ReplayTV exec Steve Shannon, is introducing a set-top box that can store up to 200 hours of video (starting at $199) and a content service ($9.99 a month) that it bills as the first to deliver DVD-quality video-on-demand to any TV via a broadband Internet connection.
The service automatically delivers an on-screen, customized program guide to subscribers' TVs and works with a home network and any broadband connection, either DSL or cable modem, to deliver specialized content.
The company has partnered with VOD service CinemaNow, Cinemapop and Ifilm, among other content providers. The product is available at akimbo.com and is expected to be in retail stores nationwide in late 2004.
