AFI Lists the Sweetest Songs in Cinema

23 Jun, 2004 By: Brendan Howard

Judy Garland's performance of “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz still brings tears to eyes, and the American Film Institute chose it as No. 1 in its “100 Years … 100 Songs” list celebrating the top movie songs of all time.

The complete list was revealed in a three-hour TV special hosted by John Travolta (who starred in Saturday Night Fever, which made the list at No. 9 with “Stayin' Alive).

The rest of the top five were No. 2 “As Time Goes By” (Casablanca), No. 3 “Singin' in the Rain” (Singin' in the Rain), “Moon River” (Breakfast at Tiffany's) and “White Christmas” (Holiday Inn).

Jurors were asked to rate songs exclusively from 60-minute-or-longer fiction films in English with significant creative and/or financial contributions from the United States. Songs were judged based on how they furthered the character, plot and theme of the film as well as their cultural impact and legacy.

A complete list of the winning songs can be viewed at www.afi.com.
