ABBA Disc Looks Behind the Scenes28 Jan, 2002 By: Hive News
Dust off those platform shoes and gold chains. Spin that mirror ball. And get ready for The Winner Takes It All, the story of Swedish pop band ABBA, set for release Feb. 26.
The 89-minute documentary DVD will feature home video as well as concert footage, including performances of the band's most popular hits like "Dancing Queen," "Fernando," "Waterloo," "Super Trooper" and "Voulez Vous."
It also marks the first time all four members -- Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Ani-Frid -- have talked about and shared the story of their lives before, during and after the group's breakup 20 years ago. Interviews with the quartet chronicle the ups and downs of musical stardom and comments from U2's Bono, Paul Gambaccini, Malcolm McLaren, Tim Rice and Steps!
The disc also features excerpts from rehearsals, performances and a promotional featurette of the stage musical, Mamma Mia! built around ABBA songs. Full motion menu screens and a main menu that randomly chooses a different audio bed of songs each time the disc is inserted into a player should generate interest among fans.
The DVD is an extended version of a documentary broadcast all over the world, including on the Bravo cable network in the U.S., in 1999. New materials on the disc were not aired in those broadcasts.
ABBA sold more than 100 million records worldwide in its heyday, but married couples Agnetha and Bjorn, Benny and Ani-Frid eventually divorced and ABBA officially disbanded in 1982.
The disc is available from Polydor/UME.
