AACS Confirms Hi-Def Breach

25 Jan, 2007 By: Erik Gruenwedel

The Los Angeles-based group that licenses and markets copyright encryption technology for next-generation optical media, including Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, has confirmed that its so-called “title keys” had been stolen and used to decrypt hi-def packaged media. The Advanced Access Content System License Administrator (AACS LA) said the breach had not compromised AACS but instead “Indicated an attack on one or more players sold by AACS licensed [consumer electronics manufacturers].”

Previously, the AACS believed hackers had breached an old version of third-party DVD-viewing software, not AACS.
