A New Wave of Danson on DVD8 Feb, 2008 By: John Latchem
With prime roles on the FX Channel drama “Damages” and the recent theatrical release Mad Money, Ted Danson is enjoying something of a career resurgence.
Paramount Home Entertainment is jumping on the uptick by scheduling DVD releases for two of Danson's better-known sitcom projects.
Becker: The First Season streets as a three-DVD set April 1 (prebook Feb. 19), nearly 10 years after the series premiered on CBS. The show ran from 1998 to 2004 and starred Danson as acerbic physician Dr. John Becker. The sitcom also starred Terry Farrell, Shawnee Smith, Hattie Winston and Alex D?sert.
April 29 (prebook March 18) comes the long-awaited Cheers: The Ninth Season as a five-DVD set. This will be the first new “Cheers” DVD release since the eighth season hit in June 2006. Paramount representatives didn't comment on the long delay, but according to Nielsen VideoScan data, sales for “Cheers” season sets have been steadily declining with each subsequent release. Sales of the second season were little more than half the first, while the eighth season sold through only 20% the volume of the first.
Some industry watchers, such as Gord Lacey of TVShowsOnDVD.com, have credited these low sales totals for keeping seasons nine, 10 and 11 off shelves, much to the chagrin of collectors.
“It's been a long wait,” Lacey said.
Damages: The Complete First Season streeted Jan. 29 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
