9/11 DVDs: Fact and Fiction

30 Aug, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold

With the fifth anniversary of 9/11 approaching, a handful of DVDs are coming to market that touch on the tragic events of that day.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has prepared a two-disc limited edition of United 93, a docudrama about the passenger revolt aboard the fourth jet hijacked the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The DVD streets Sept. 5 and comes with two bonus documentaries: Chasing Planes: Witnesses to 9/11 chronicles the day through the eyes of the civilian and military ground control personnel, and United 93: The Families and the Film features interviews with family members of the passengers and their interactions with the actors. A single-DVD edition also is available, with only the documentary about the families.

“This critically acclaimed film was wholly embraced by the families and is a tribute to the unforgettable determination of the passengers and crew,” said Universal president Craig Kornblau.

Lionsgate last week released On Native Soil: The Documentary of the 9/11 Commission Report, an extended version of the documentary, narrated by Kevin Costner and Hilary Swank, that aired in August on Court TV.

And Vivendi Visual Entertainment Sept. 12 will release The Great New Wonderful, a comedy-drama with five interconnected storylines set in New York City less than one year after 9/11.

“The Great New Wonderful touches on 9/11 in a way no other film does,” said Gary Rubin, president of First Independent Pictures, the film's theatrical distributor. “It is about the process of rebuilding and healing.”

Also up: The Disinformation Company's 9/11 Press for Truth (Sept. 12) and Docurama's Parallel Lines (Sept. 26), about director Nina Davenport's post-9/11 road trip to see what people had to say about the terrorist attacks.
