Guild: Season Three, The (DVD Review)27 May, 2010 By: John Latchem
New Video NYC
Stars Felicia Day, Jeff Lewis, Sandeep Parikh, Amy Okuda, Vincent Caso, Robin Thorsen, Wil Wheaton.
Long ago Wil Wheaton played the oft-derided child prodigy Wesley Crusher on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Two decades later he has parlayed that reputation into full-blown fanboy villain, not only as a caricature of himself on “The Big Bang Theory,” but also as the devious Fawkes in the third season of the hilarious Web series “The Guild.”
Through a series of five-minute webisodes, the show details the dysfunctions of The Knights of Good, a team of online role-playing video gamers whose hobby all too often gets in the way of their real lives. The third season finds them cracking under the pressure of fighting off rival guild the Axis of Anarchy, led by Fawkes. Subplots weave throughout the season before coming to a head in a geek-infused showdown, as Codex (played by series creator Felicia Day) tries to keep the team together long enough for guildmaster Vork (the hilarious Jeff Lewis, playing a classic cheapskate dork of a character) to return from a journey of self-discovery.
The DVD is loaded with extras, from commentaries, bonus episodes, behind-the-scenes featurettes and a “Do You Want to Date My Avatar” music video (which plays into the show’s primary theme of fantasy vs. reality). But most interesting and valuable to fans is a brief panel discussion with Day and her creative team describing the process of making a Web series, sort of a primer for anyone who has a creative idea but isn’t quite sure how to bring it to fruition.
As “The Guild” proves, one doesn’t necessarily need a giant budget to pull off quality entertainment, just a good idea and the temerity to see it through.
