Sony Distributing Netflix’s ‘Cards’ Abroad2 Oct, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Sony Pictures Television will be in Cannes Oct. 8 at the MIPCOM film market showcasing Netflix’s pending original series “House of Cards” starring Oscar winner Kevin Spacey and directed by Oscar nominee David Fincher (The Social Network).
Sony Pictures is the international distributor for “Cards,” which bows on Netflix as an entire 13-episode series in 2013. The show is a reboot of the original BBC mini-series — this time focusing on the power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington, D.C.
With Netflix operating in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and launching service in Scandinavia this quarter, Sony Pictures would presumably distribute the series throughout the rest of Europe and other regions. A Netflix spokesperson referred the matter to Sony Pictures. A Sony representative was not immediately available for comment.
Also attending MIPCOM for “Cards” will be Oscar-nominated writer Beau Willimon (The Ides of March) and Golden Globe nominee Robin Wright (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo).
