Netflix Ups Discovery Channel Streaming Rights

21 Sep, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

The beleaguered rental service continues to upgrade streaming content to retain and attract subscribers

Netflix Sept. 21 said it renewed for two years a non-exclusive license agreement with Discovery Communications that enables its subscribers to stream prior-season series from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and Investigation Discovery.

The expanded deal affords Netflix subs streaming access to additional back episodes of such popular series as “Man vs. Wild,” “Say Yes to the Dress” and “River Monsters,” among others.

“With television shows playing an ever more important role for Netflix, Discovery is one our finest suppliers of top-quality programming,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing our members the wide range of the additional episodes and series covered in this deal.”
