Netflix Feb. 22 said an app for its subscription streaming service is available for Sony’s new PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) handheld video game device, which launched today.

The handheld wireless 3G console is the successor to the PlayStation Portable. It was launched by Sony Computer Electronics with the game “Little Deviants” included, in addition to a 4G memory card.

The Netflix Vita app is free and can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store, according to Brady Gunderson, Netflix product developer, who disclosed the news in a post on the Netflix blog.

“We hope you enjoy another way to watch Netflix wherever you are,” Gunderson wrote.

The PS Vita is compatible with Portable games purchased on the PS Network and PS Store. Specifically, the handheld features a 5-inch (130 mm) OLED multitouch capacitive touchscreen, and supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and optional 3G.

Internally, the Vita features a 4-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor and a 4-core SGX543MP4+ graphics processing unit, as well as LiveArea software as its main user interface.
