Netflix Has Streaming Gifts, But ‘Bah Humbug’ to Disc?

19 Dec, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

In the throes of the Christmas season, Netflix is marketing several gift subscription options — none of which include disc rentals.

Streaming gift plans are available in five options, including one month at $7.99, two months at $15.98, three months at $23.97, six months at $47.94 and one year at $95.88.

While Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix stakes the present and future on subscription video-on-demand, it apparently continues to give its pioneering by-mail Blu-ray Disc and DVD rental business the cold shoulder. Indeed, the gift plans can be exchanged for access to disc rentals, including Blu-ray, but Netflix says that could shorten the length of subscription since it charges a premium for discs.

Netflix does offer a three-month gift subscription that includes one DVD out at a time and streaming for $47.94.

The plans are non-refundable and include eight gift card options, which can either be mailed or emailed to recipients. The plans automatically transfer into monthly subscriptions unless canceled prior to the end of the gift subscription.
