Netflix, Film Independent Announce Competition Winner

2 Sep, 2009 By: Billy Gil

The winner of the “Netflix FIND Your Voice” filmmaking competition is Philip G. Flores of Hemet, Calif., who will have his submission made into a feature-length film.

The competition, started by Netflix and nonprofit organization Film Independent (FIND), which produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film festival, nine months ago asked filmmakers to submit proposals for films, to be judged by such film industry veterans as actor/director Josh Brolin and actor/writer/director John Sayles. Flores’ project, Touchback, about a high-school freshman who enters into a contest based on sexual conquest, will be made into a narrative film to premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June 2010 and be available to watch instantly through Netflix.

“We are delighted to give Philip an opportunity to bring Touchback to life,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. “It was the goal of the ‘Netflix FIND Your Voice’ competition to give talented filmmakers a platform for their work, and we are gratified to have achieved that through this project.”

Flores, 28, will receive a production package valued at more than $350,000, including a $150,000 cash production grant from Netflix; a camera from Panavision; 25,000 feet of Kodak Color Negative Film or 10,000 feet of Kodak Color Intermediate Film; dailies and release prints from Deluxe Entertainment Services Group; and a digital intermediate package from EFILM Hollywood, a division of Deluxe. Additionally FIND will offer advice and mentorship to Flores.

More than 2,000 applications and scripts were submitted, from which 10 semifinalists were each asked to submit two- to three-minute video shorts related to their film proposals. Applicants were required to be first-time filmmakers who had never created and publicly screened a full-length, narrative feature film of 70 minutes or longer. The winner was chosen by a panel after six films were selected from an online vote on the competition’s Web site, www.netflixfindyourvoice.com.
