Xbox Adds New Apps27 Mar, 2014 By: Chris Tribbey
Microsoft has rolled out more apps for the Xbox Live, including Major League Gaming (MLG), along with the TV Everywhere apps Encore Play and MoviePlex Play from Starz.
Starz debuted its Starz Play on Xbox Live in December, and while it, Encore Play and MoviePlex Play are available only for the Xbox 360 at launch, expansion to the Xbox One platform is expected soon.
Starz Play offers about 400 monthly selections, including 100 episodes of Starz Original series content, including “Black Sails,” “The White Queen,” “Spartacus” and “Da Vinci’s Demons,“ along with 300 movies, including first-run films from Disney (Iron Man 3, Monsters University) and Sony Pictures (This Is the End, White House Down, Grown Ups 2). Encore Play offers about 1,500 monthly selections, including 300 movies (Oz the Great and Powerful, Zero Dark Thirty). MoviePlex offers about 200 movies each month.
Xbox 360 users who are also Time Warner Cable Digital Basic and Preferred TV subscribers will also be able to access the Epix app for no additional cost through June 18.
All of the Starz TV Everywhere services feature parental controls, touchscreen commands and Facebook and Twitter integration.
The MLG app allows Xbox Live Gold members in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States to watch MLG.tv programming, including gaming tournaments, original programming, gaming news and more.
Xbox Live now also has the MLB.tv app, allowing MLB.tv Premium subscribers to watch live, high-def quality video of all out-of-market regular season games in 2014. The service also features full-game archives for every game.
