New to town and ready to prove himself, a freshly minted doctor, Martin Blake (Orlando Bloom), feels a certain pressure to perform. While nurse Theresa (Taraji P. Henson) doesn’t make things easy for Martin, his boss, Dr. Waylans (Rob Morrow), and colleague, Dan (Troy Garity), are supportive.
When 18-year-old Diane (Riley Keough) is admitted to the hospital for treatment of a kidney disease, Martin goes through extreme, unethical lengths to capture the girl’s attention and keep it. Diane gives Martin the respect (ego boost) that he craves, but the attention almost becomes an addiction for the young doctor. From toying with her dosages to keeping her on-and-off-again boyfriend at bay, Martin’s unhealthy obsession with the doe-eyed girl surely will get him in trouble. It’s oddly enticing to see just how far the “good doctor” will go to keep his infatuated patient around.
Soon Martin’s malpractices get out of hand and catch up to him in devastating ways. Crude orderly Jimmy (Michael Peña) finds incriminating evidence about the sullied doctor-patient relationship, and Martin falls deeper into his web of deceit — this time with even harsher consequences.
The plot twists and turns throw viewers for a loop, especially when the unexpected happens and the expected doesn’t. The suspense here is killer, and the filmmakers do a commendable job of making The Good Doctor an adept thriller that leaves viewers guessing throughout.
Bloom becomes the terribly flawed physician in a role unlike any other I’ve seen him play. Though audiences naturally should be disgusted with Martin for his unforgivable acts, it’s likely you’ll empathize with the misguided man. The film ends abruptly, sparing the viewer from the sorrow of watching the lonely doctor meet the fate he created for himself.
