2 Feb, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

First-ever deal includes more than 500 movies (notably missing Summit Entertainment titles) for pay-TV, VOD and digital services

Lionsgate and Starz Entertainment Feb. 2 said they have signed a multiyear deal that brings more than 500 catalog titles from the Santa Monica, Calif.-based minimajor to Starz’ 17 premium movie channels in the United States.

Englewood, Colo.-based Starz is a major distributor of third-party studio and original content to cable and satellite TV operators via its Starz, Encore and Movieplex pay-TV channels and related online video-on-demand properties.

Recent Lionsgate theatrical releases in the agreement include The Expendables, The Last Exorcism, Conan The Barbarian, Abduction, From Prada to Nada, Margin Call, Red State, Precious, Rambo, Alpha & Omega, From Paris with Love, The Good Guy, Rabbit Hole and 3:10 To Yuma, among others.

Catalog titles include the popular “Tyler Perry” movie franchise as well as the classic “Saw” franchise, with myriad other popular horror titles from Lionsgate’s 13,000-film library. Other movies include, Crash, The Punisher, Punisher: War Zone, Monster’s Ball, The Blair Witch Project, Reservoir Dogs, Dirty Dancing, The Jazz Singer and Meatballs.

The deal does not include movies from the “The Twilight Saga” teen vampire franchise and others from Summit Entertainment, which recently was acquired by Lionsgate.

"This is another significant step in the ongoing monetization of our filmed entertainment library, and we're delighted to extend and expand our productive long-term relationship with Starz, with whom we most recently partnered on the television series ‘Boss’,” said Jim Packer, Lionsgate president of worldwide television and digital distribution. “[We remain] committed to tapping traditional and digital buyers alike as we explore ways to unlock the value of our vast filmed entertainment library asset.”

Starz Entertainment is an operating unit of Starz LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Media Corp.
