Lionsgate: 'Breaking Dawn' Sales Hit 3.2 Million Discs

13 Feb, 2012 By: Chris Tribbey

Sales of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 hit an estimated 3.2 million discs during its first weekend of release, partly thanks to midnight release parties at major retailers.

Disc sales of Breaking Dawn were up 18% compared to first weekend sales for The Twilight Sage: Eclipse, the third film in the franchise. Electronic sellthrough was up more than 47% to approximately 50,000 transactions, and VOD was up 142%, with approximately 80,000 transactions.

“The incredible fan support for the characters and story that author Stephenie Meyer has created never ceases to impress,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said in a statement. “We thank all of the fans for continuing their journey with us beyond the big screen and look forward to bringing you Breaking Dawn — Part 2 later this year.”

The final film in the franchise is due in theaters Nov. 16.

Both Target and Walmart offered exclusive versions of the DVD, which had a higher price point compared with earlier films in the franchise.

Breaking Dawn — Part 1 has grossed more than $700 million worldwide at the box office.
