Lionsgate Bowing 100 New Titles to DVD-on-demand

6 Dec, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Lionsgate Dec. 6 said it is for the first time releasing 100 movies and TV programs through Amazon’s on-demand, disc-replication service, CreateSpace.

Intitial titles available beginning Dec. 13 include High Heels, directed by Pedro Almodóvar and featuring Javier Bardem; Wildfire: Season 4, the long-awaited final season of the ABC Family series; and Brighton Rock, the classic British film (also known as Young Scarface) starring Richard Attenborough.

“Working with CreateSpace is the perfect opportunity to deliver directly to the most ardent fans of this content,” said Ron Schwartz, EVP and GM of Lionsgate.

Lionsgate joins Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, CBS, Anchor Bay and Gaiam in releasing lesser-known catalog titles to packaged media based on consumer demand.

CreateSpace, which does not offer titles in Blu-ray Disc, allows studios to avoid large replication runs on titles that may not warrant the expense.

CreateSpace also has the ability to distribute content through Amazon.com and other channels, including Amazon Instant Video.

It should be noted that on-demand DVD titles, which include original box art, typically are not accepted at buy-trade-sell retailers.
