Vizio Files HDTV Patent Suit Against Funai Electric21 May, 2009 By: Chris Tribbey
Vizio May 21 announced it has filed a patent infringement suit against fellow HDTV manufacturer Funai Electric Co.
Vizio said in a press release that Japan-based Funai, which manufactures and distributes HDTVs for brands such as Philips and Magnavox, “infringes numerous Vizio patents in its manufacturing, importation and distribution of high-definition televisions.”
Vizio, which is based in Irvine, Calif., is seeking unspecified damages for past Funai HDTV sales and is asking for an injunction prohibiting Funai from importing and selling HDTVs that allegedly infringe on Vizio’s patents.
“Unlike Funai, our patent portfolio has not been rejected by the [United States Patent and Trademark Office], we at Vizio respect the rights of intellectual property and we will not stand by while foreign competitors misappropriate our intellectual property,” said Laynie Newsome, Vizio co-founder and VP of sales and marketing communications, in the press release.
A copy of the suit, which Vizio said it filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, was not immediately available.
