The latest in a long line of edutainment programming, “The Zula Patrol” is essentially an animated encyclopedia that has been making the rounds on television, mixing an adventure story with lessons for the kids. Animal Adventures in Space includes five episodes in which the members of the Zula Patrol protect the creatures of planet Zula.

Most episodes start with some sort of problem relating to the environment, prompting the characters to consult their “Multo-pedia” to learn more about the issue. The characters are then transported to a virtual world where they fly around on a book to witness a lesson as it is explained. In the process, children are told about the importance of respecting ecosystems. Each 15-minute episode concludes with a short lesson recap.

This simplistic show is strictly for younger viewers, who will gravitate toward its cute characters, catchy songs and colorful animation. Among the bonus features is a sing-along mode for the songs from the various episodes.
The DVD also includes a code redeemable for 200 “Zlinkles,” the currency of ZulaWorld, that can be spent on virtual items at ZulaWorld.com. A brief tutorial about the Web site is offered as an extra on the disc.
