Warner Bows ‘Harry Potter Spells’ App

5 Aug, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD), which manages Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group’s electronic distribution, has launched a free app that allows fans of the Harry Potter franchise to cast “spells” on other Apple iPhone and iTouch users via wireless or Bluetooth connections.

Based on a Harry Potter Facebook user survey, WBDD is offering the three most popular spells on the App Store, including Avada Kedavra (instantly defeats your opponent), Morsmordre (summons the Dark Mark) and Reparo (repairs broken objects) for 99 cents each.

Spells allow wizards-in-training to duel others (and collect house points) by casting spells from one device to another. After receiving an official invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, students visit Ollivanders wand shop, where the wand chooses its new master.

Players are then introduced to the legendary Sorting Hat and placed into one of the four houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin). Then it’s off to Wizard Training in Practice, where players learn the specific hand gestures or touch mechanisms to cast each spell.

The app allows users to track accumulated house points and accomplishments, including total number of house points earned, name, house, wins/losses in dueling, total house points, player’s rank within the house and in the school.

A leader board displays top-ranked players in all four houses, and an overall leader board showcases the top Hogwarts students. Players can also post profiles and scores on Facebook.

The full version of the App, which includes 17 spells and one premium spell pack, also is available, for $2.99.
