Apple: 9 Million New iPhone Models Sold in 72 Hours23 Sep, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Tech giant sales opening weekend sales record portends rosy fourth quarter
What a difference a long weekend makes. Apple Sept. 23 said it has sold a record 9 million units of its new iPhone 5c and 5s mobile phone since their Sept. 20 retail bow. The previous opening-weekend sales record was 5 million units.
As a result, Apple said investors should expect good news when the Cupertino, Calif.-based icon releases its fourth quarter results, according to a regulatory filing.
The initial retail success of the new iPhones comes at a good time for Apple, which was dealing with declining market valuation as Samsung and HTC collectively made inroads into the company’s dominant smart phone market share.
In addition to fingerprint security, a higher pixel camera and larger images, the 5c and 5s sport a much faster A7 processor and iOS7 operating system: Both key to navigating the increasingly complex world of apps and rich media such as video.
