Iconic brand gets first Blu-ray Disc release

Mattel Feb. 26 launched Barbie in the Pink Shoes, the 25th DVD release and the first featuring the iconic Mattel doll on Blu-ray Disc.

Since the first Barbie DVD, Barbie in the Nutcracker, released in 2001 from Lionsgate, the brand has sold more than 110 million discs. Universal Studios Home Entertainment assumed distribution rights in 2006.

In the new movie, Barbie stars as Kristyn Farraday, a ballerina with big dreams. When she tries on a pair of sparkling pink shoes, she and her best friend are whisked away to a fantastical place. Embarking on a magical adventure, she learns when you dance from your heart, dreams can come true.

Barbie in the Pink Shoes was created by Technicolor’s digital productions division. The Paris-based company’s CGI unit first worked on Barbie DVDs in 2011 with Barbie: A Perfect Christmas. Pink Shoes will be Mattel’s first Barbie feature released on Blu-ray.

"The Barbie brand’s first production with Technicolor was such a successful creative collaboration, we’re pleased to continue our partnership with our newest title, Barbie in the Pink Shoes,” said Rob Hudnut, EVP of Barbie Entertainment at Mattel. “The Technicolor teams in both Hollywood and Bangalore have proven not only to understand Mattel’s vision for the Barbie brand, but also their eagerness to help us expand on that vision in a number of engaging and innovative ways.”
