Former Miramax CEO and Hulu co-founder joins cloud-based film and TV rights management company
Mike Lang, former CEO of Miramax, has joined the board of directors of FilmTrack, an online movie and TV program rights management company.
Lang, who has been consulting for FilmTrack through his Lang Media Group, was instrumental in the company securing $20 million in venture funding from Insight Venture Partners.
FilmTrack offers a cloud-based platform for content, contract and rights management that enable film, video and television publishers to manage the entire properties — from inbound script to global distribution agreements.
The company reportedly provides business and technology expertise to several film distributors, including Relativity Media, The Weinstein Co., Focus Features, Miramax, Lionsgate, Screen Australia and Starz, among others.
The investment comes as media companies are increasingly shifting toward online platforms to streamline their IP supply chain and license sales activities.
"I know from firsthand experience that FilmTrack is the long-awaited platform that will enable film and television companies to effectively and efficiently manage their IP from inception to long-tail release,” Lang said in a statement. “The company solves an issue that content publishers have been dealing with for years."
While at Miramax, Lang helped the studio monetize its venerable 700-plus movie catalog via packaged media and digital distribution deals with Lionsgate, Netflix, LoveFilm and Canadian distributors, among others.
