Hulu Plus to Stream Original British Comedy Sept. 96 Sep, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Hulu Plus, the subscription video-on-demand unit of ad-supported Hulu.com, is set to stream season four new episodes of British political comedy “The Thick of It,” beginning Sept. 9. The fourth season of the co-production with BBC Worldwide will also be available on Hulu beginning Oct. 21.
The BBC production, which takes a satirical look inside the British government, represents Hulu’s effort to offer viewers original programming. It’s a strategy SVOD pioneer Netflix has taken the lead through the February bow of original series “Lilyhammer,” and pending productions “Orange is the New Black,” “House of Cards” and rebooted “Arrested Development,” among others.
Similar to Netflix, ad-supported Hulu will offer viewers access to all episodes Oct. 21 — a strategy unlike multichannel video program distributors, which offer episodic programming on a weekly sequential basis. The episodes will be shown on Hulu Plus sequentially on a weekly basis beginning Sept. 9.
The first three seasons of "The Thick of It" care currently available on Hulu Plus and Hulu.
Hulu, which is co-owned by The Walt Disney Co., News Corp. and NBC Universal, first announced co-production of the British series in July.
“I very quickly became obsessed with this show, and it is exactly the kind of show Hulu viewers will love,” Hulu SVP of content Andy Forssell said at the time. “We’re really excited to give U.S. audiences a chance to catch up with all previous episodes, and as series co-producers for season four, we are proud to make full seasons of this distinctive and smart show available exclusively to Hulu viewers.”
