Criterion Collection Available on Hulu Plus

15 Feb, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Esteemed movie ensemble Criterion Collection is now available on Hulu Plus, the $7.99 monthly subscription service associated with ad-supported repurposed content aggregator Hulu.com.

Hulu is co-owned by The Walt Disney Co., NBC Universal and News Corp.

The Criterion Collection on Hulu Plus features more than 150 movies available for download from lauded directors such as Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, François Truffaut and Wim Wenders, among others. Among the launch list today are classics: The 400 Blows, L’Avventura, The Battle of Algiers, Breathless, La Jetée, Jules and Jim, M, Pickpocket, Playtime, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, La Strada and The Wages of Fear.

In addition to remastered, high-definition copies, Criterion titles are known for extensive bonus features, including in-depth director commentaries, third-party analyses, outtakes, documentaries, interviews, original trailers and essays — many of which will be available for download.

Hulu plans to incorporate the remaining 800 movies in the Criterion Collection on a monthly basis, in addition to offering select titles with ads for non-Plus subscribers, according to Eugene Wei, SVP of audience development.

“Thanks to our advertising partners, Hulu Plus subscribers will be able to watch the Criterion Collection free of interruption,” Wei wrote in a post.

The Criterion Collection is available on DVD and Blu-ray from Image Entertainment.
