Sanyo Bows Fast BD Writer

6 Oct, 2008 By: Chris Tribbey

Japan’s Sanyo Electric announced Oct. 3 it had developed a semiconductor laser diode that can record to a four-layer Blu-ray Disc 12 times real time, or 10 minutes for a two-hour film.

But with current Blu-ray standards maxing discs out at two layers, and Sanyo not looking at mass production of the laser diode for at least two years, the news means little for Blu-ray consumer electronics products for now.

Sanyo officials told Asian news organizations they had tested the diode for 1,000-plus hours of operation.
