A new study from Opinion Research Company finds that 62% of American consumers own an HDTV, with another 12% looking to buy one within the next two years.
“As movie studios, cable and satellite operators, and broadcast networks offer more and more high-definition programming, consumers are responding by upgrading to high-definition televisions,” said Manuel Flores, VP and director of the research firm’s technology market division. “While purchase intention over the next 24 months looks promising, the economy remains a major hurdle to sustainable growth.”
Sony emerged as the clear-cut No. 1 HDTV company, with 43% of respondents saying they made the best HDTVs. Samsung (11%), Panasonic (5%) and Vizio (4%) were next in line.
The lone negative from the report: only 5% of survey respondents said they planned on buying a 3D TV in the next two years.
