Vizio Tops Sony in Q4 Flat-Panel TV Market

Irvine, Calif.-based Vizio accounted for more than 14% of flat-panel TV (LCD and plasma) unit shipments in the United States in the fourth quarter, up 3% from 11% in the third quarter, according to a new report from iSuppli Corp.

In contrast, Sony and Samsung suffered declines of 0.42% and 0.62%, respectively, during the same period. Sony’s share declined to 13.5% in the fourth quarter, down from 13.9% in the third, allowing Vizio to take the No. 2 position, behind Samsung with its 20% share.

The report cited Vizio’s aggressive discounting and popular retail channels, including Costco and Wal-Mart.
